What to check on a pre-owned Seiko

Seiko is the easiest Japanese brand to buy well and the easiest to buy badly. Cases are often polished thin, dials are swapped, and reference numbers get mixed up between near-identical models. These are the three things we check on every Seiko before it goes on this page, and the same three you should check anywhere else.

01  Case and caseback

Sharp edges, readable numbers

A Seiko caseback carries the model code, for example 7T92-0AW0 or 8M32-8030. If it is rubbed smooth, the watch has been over-polished. Where a listing shows the caseback, you can read it yourself.

02  Dial and hands

Matching age and lume

On a vintage piece the dial and hands should have aged together. Bright white lume in bright white hands on a 1980s watch usually means a service replacement, which is fine, as long as you are told.

03  Movement and running

Quartz, solar or automatic

Seiko quartz calibres are robust but need a fresh cell. Solar Speedtimers need a capacitor that still holds charge. Automatics should wind and set cleanly. We state in each listing what is original and what was serviced.

Are these Seiko watches genuine?

Yes. Every watch sold by DAR is covered by our authenticity guarantee: if any piece is ever proven not genuine, you get a full refund. We do not sell replicas or aftermarket rebuilds.

Are they new or pre-owned?

Both. We stock current Seiko Prospex and Presage references in brand-new condition alongside vintage Seiko quartz pieces from the 1970s to the 1990s. The condition is stated clearly on every listing, and the photographs show the watch exactly as it is.

Do the vintage Seikos come with a box and papers?

Usually not. Vintage Seiko quartz watches are decades old and most were worn, not stored. Where a watch does come with its original box or papers, the listing says so explicitly.
